An interesting way of training misbehaving dogs. This TV series and its star Cesar Millan came into prominence when National Geographic aired the series of the same name, which shows how Cesar Millan trains dogs which the owners have practically given up upon. It is said that often it is the owners that need to be trained, to assume leadership of the pack, in order to restore the dog to a calm, obedient state. Millan often shows astonishing results on the show itself by demonstrating pack leader techniques. “Exercise-Discipline-Affection” is a core 3-step process that he goes through on the show. Millan has demonstrated his techniques with great success in various TV shows.
The show is not without its critics, however. Some behavior consultants, professional consultants and behaviorists feel that his training methods of training are inhumane, referring to the use of alpha rolls (a technique whereby one flips a dog on its back, and holds it down, often by the throat, to instil discipline), flooding (where the animal is flooded with fear-provoking or aggression-provoking stimuli, and prevented from leaving, until it stops reacting) , and punishment, which they feel will lead to serious behavioral consequences.
