I favour the Click Method for this. The Click Method is one by which the dog is trained using purely positive reinforcement. That is, the dog is rewarded for exhibiting a desired behavior. The Click Method gets its name from the fact that an audible cue is given (in this case, a click, produced by a device known as a clicker) to alert the animal that it is going to be given a reward.

The method:
1. Begin by repeatedly using the clicker and immediately after each click, giving the dog an edible treat. In time to come, the dog will associate the click with an immediate treat.
2. Stop the clicking. The dog will look expectantly at you, expecting a click. Now display a treat and click and give the dog the treat.
3. Hold the treat up so that the dog has to look up to see the treat before the click.
4. After a few minutes the dog gets somewhat tired of lifting its head up, and will end up sitting on its haunches while waiting. The moment the dog sits, click and treat.
5. After a while you will notice the dog sitting expectantly while waiting for its treat. Now the moment the dog starts sitting down on its haunches, say “sit”, and immediately reinforce it with a click and the treat.
6. After a while the dog will learn to sit upon the command “sit”, knowing that it will be rewarded with a click and a treat.
7. After a further while, the dog will sit upon hearing the command “sit” without expecting a treat all the time.

Easy as it sounds, this lesson will take a while to be learned. Be patient.
