Memorise these points. Refer to them frequently, so you do not repeat a mistake made by countless of dog owners trying to train their dogs.
1. Realise that dogs are intelligent creatures and very trainable. They just take time to learn, and the speed of learning varies according to the dog. Do not expect instant miracles. Be patient. The dog you see next door sitting or playing dead on command did not learn this overnight.
2. Let your dog know who is master. Do not train yourself to obey the dog, in trying to see what makes it tick, and allowing it to behave it as it wishes without control and giving way to its desires. The dog will run out of control.
3. Don’t lose your temper over your dog while training it. This will usually result in a frightened dog which will not learn anything or may learn the wrong thing, or an owner who, out of frustration, may either hit out at the dog or give up completely. Never yell at your dog when training it. The dog will end up very afraid of you and this makes it even harder to train.
4. Don’t give up. Rome was not built in a day. Dogs love to learn, especially if the learning process is rewarded with frequent delicious treats for positive behavior learnt.
5. Be consistent with your training. Do not give conflicting commands for the same desired action, or the same command for different actions.
Persistence in training will result in your obtaining a much more obedient dog and much more satisfying a relationship with your dog.
