Aggressive Dog Behavior Surges

The longer your dog isn’t socialized or the longer your dog gets to misbehave the harder it is to reeducate your dog and us humans as well.

Tucson, AZ (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

Tucson, Arizona’s aggressive dog training specialist, Gerard Raneri of Bark Busters Tucson, is reporting a surge in aggressive dog behavior throughout 2011 and heading into 2012. Mr. Raneri links the increase in aggression to the economic downturn, that an increase in pressure and tension is trickling down to the pet population.

The training firm credits financial uncertainty as leading to fewer people seeking professional help with serious behavior problems. Families are putting off getting help with dominance and aggressive behavior being displayed by their pets and the problems when not faced early get worse.

“It starts out for many with their dogs showing lower level signs of dominance,” said Mr. Raneri, behavior specialist, adding “The longer your dog isn’t socialized or the longer your dog gets to misbehave the harder it is to reeducate your dog and us humans as well.”

The financial uncertainty is leading to an increase in dog population at rescue agencies and being euthanized. According to the Center for Disease Control an estimated 368,245 people were treated for non-fatal dog bite related injuries with 42% of bites occurring in among children aged 14 and younger.

“Families experiencing aggressive behavior from their family dog owe it to themselves to get help to eliminate the aggression right away,” said Mr. Raneri, adding, “Do not wait until tragedy has struck.”

KNOXVILLE — The fate of a Knoxville man accused of dragging his then-girlfriend’s dog behind his truck is now in the hands of a Knox County jury.

Jurors in Criminal Court will deliberate this afternoon whether Jimmy Lovell, 47, is guilty of aggravated animal cruelty in the November 2009 dragging of a 17-pound terrier mix later dubbed “Little Brown Dog.” The case captured the attention of animal lovers throughout the region who coughed up $13,000 for the female dog’s care and even created a Facebook page in honor of the pooch.

But the case turns, not on whether it was Lovell behind the wheel, but whether Lovell intended to drag the dog, which was owned by Lovell’s then-girlfriend, Tonya Eubanks

Jurors today got a closer look at the man cast as the villain in the saga of the Little Brown Dog via testimony from a businessman in his neighborhood and Lovell himself.

Lovell told jurors he dropped out of school in the ninth grade and has suffered a series of head traumas that impacted his mental capacity. Despite that, Lovell has always managed to earn a living, businessman Asa Hobbs said.

“He did whatever he could to make a living,” Hobbs said. “He did a good job of it. He’s a good member of the community.”

Hobbs was with Lovell on the day of the dragging when Lovell returned to his Pilkay Road home to gather tools to fix a friend’s vehicle in hopes of earning money to repair his own truck. Eubanks had left the dog, which she had brought to Lovell’s home a few days before, inside the house while she went with a friend to the hospital, according to testimony.

“I brung (sic) him outside,” Lovell testified. “I had him on a leash. It’s about six feet (long). I was letting (the dog) use the restroom.”

Hobbs said Lovell turned the pooch over to him so Lovell could finish rounding up tools.

“He asked me to walk the dog so he could get his stuff,” Hobbs testified. “He was running in and out of the house.”

When Lovell asked Hobbs to take a look at his truck’s engine, Hobbs said he tried to secure the leash to a fence pole, but it wouldn’t stay attached.

“We just laid (the leash handle) on the (ball hitch) of the truck,” Hobbs said. “The dog just laid down and we went up (to the) front (of the truck).”

Lovell later received a phone inside his house from his friend, who urged Lovell to hurry to the garage where Lovell would repair his friend’s vehicle, both men said. Lovell said his friend assured him he would have enough money to pay Lovell, who had been set to borrow cash for his own truck repairs from Hobbs.

“(Lovell) said, ‘I’ve got it all worked out,’ ” Hobbs said.

By then, both men had forgotten the dog, each testified. Defense attorney Mike Whalen showed photographs of Lovell’s house and the position of Lovell’s truck to argue Lovell could not have seen the rear of the truck as he exited his house and got into the cab.

Lovell said he was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Knott Road and Liberty Street when he first heard people yelling. He said he wasn’t sure at whom they were yelling. He turned onto Liberty Street and began to realize the bystanders were “hollering at me,” Lovell testified.

“They was hollering at me to stop, and I said, ‘Oh, God! I forgot the dog,’ ” Lovell testified.

It was what he did — or didn’t do — next that Assistant District Attorney General Debbie Malone argues shows his intent to harm the animal. Her witnesses — the angry bystanders — testified Lovell stopped the truck, walked to the rear bumper, “jerked the dog up by the leash” and tossed it into the passenger side of the truck before driving away.

Lovell denied casually tossing the dog into his truck, and Whalen argued that if Lovell had no regard for the animal, he would have pitched it into the truck bed.

Lovell concedes he did not seek medical attention for the dog. He said he had no money to do so. Instead, he took it home, he said, wrapped it in a towel, called Hobbs for advice and left the dog behind as he spent the next 20 minutes at his friend’s house. He said he did not realize the extent of the dog’s injuries. When he returned home, Eubanks arrived a short time later.

“She left with the dog and said she’d take care of it,” he said.

Testimony on Tuesday showed Eubanks took the dog to an animal shelter, lied about finding the dog abandoned on the side of the road and gave a fake name.

More details as they develop online and in Thursday’s News Sentinel.

WAYNE, PA, Feb 21, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) –
Radnor Veterinary Hospital announced that the practice is now
located in the Pet Village of Wayne. The practice, which relocated in
November 2011, chose the new location because it is a one-stop pet
community with convenient services for pet owners. The Pet Village
includes other animal service facilities including the Radnor Dog
Club, Pets in Motion Dog Training, Dogma Dog Spa and Bark Avenue
Boutique. The Radnor Veterinary Hospital continues to provide
comprehensive companion animal care, including wellness care for
dogs, cats and exotic pets.

Wayne veterinarian Dr. Len Donato announced that the Radnor
Veterinary Hospital has settled into their new facility at the Wayne
Pet Village. The animal hospital is now located at 107 N. Aberdeen
Avenue.

“On behalf of our entire veterinary care team, I am excited to
announce our recent relocation to the Pet Village,” said Dr. Donato.
“The relocation is part of our commitment to provide pet owners with
convenient access to veterinary care.”

The small animal vet clinic continues to provide routine wellness
care for dogs, cats and exotic pets. These services include
vaccinations, spay/neuter operations, annual exams, dental care,
orthopedic surgery and emergency care.

The new facilities allow the animal hospital to offer extended
boarding services, which are available to all pets, including those
who are not currently patients of the animal hospital. Prior to
boarding, pet owners must show proof that their pets are up to date
on all required vaccinations.

According to Dr. Kimberly Bowers, a veterinarian with the practice,
the animal vet clinic selected the new location based on its
convenient access to pet care services. “Our pet community truly
provides one-stop service for pet owners,” said Dr. Bowers. “From
grooming and dog training to veterinary care and pet accessories, the
Pet Village is designed to make pet care convenient and easy — it’s
the ultimate convenience for pet owners!”

The Pet Village also includes pet services providers Radnor Dog Club,
Pets in Motion Dog Training, Dogma Dog Spa and Bark Avenue Boutique.

The veterinary hospital will continue to have a veterinarian and
support team on duty six days per week. In addition to routine care,
the team is also trained to handle emergency and urgent care needs.

“We are committed to providing pet owners with high-quality
veterinary services,” said Dr. Meghan McGrath. “Whether your pet
needs a routine vaccination or experiences a health emergency, our
team is here to help. Our hope is that our new location makes it even
easier for pet owners to ensure their pets receive they care they
need.”

The new location features the latest vet care technology, including
digital radiography, a soft tissue and orthopedic surgery operation
suite, and endoscopic surgical care.

Pet owners can also take advantage of the practice’s Delaware County
Dog Licensing Service, which is available Monday through Friday from
7:00am to 6:00pm.

“Whether your pet needs a day at the dog spa, assistance with
training, or a dental cleaning, you’ll find all these services at the
Pet Village,” said Dr. Jeffrey Szanto. “We are excited to offer this
convenience to St. Davids pet owners.”

Pet owners can learn more about the vet care services on the
practice’s website

HOST families in Somerset are needed to help look after four legged friends enjoying a break.

The call comes from Robert Schuler, of canine care company Barking Mad.

He said: “People say the best thing about being a grandparent is handing the children back at the end of the day. The canine equivalent for dogs is our company, Barking Mad.

“The company has been so successful since its launch in 2001, that I’m now keen to recruit additional host families in order to keep up with the continued demand for the service, particularly
through the summer months.

“Barking Mad offers a professional, caring service where pets are accommodated in a loving home environment with select families while their owners are away from home for whatever reason.

“Pets are suitably matched with a host family who continues the owner’s existing routine for exercising and feeding, and whose environment is similar to the pet’s home.

“Barking Mad’s host families are very special people. They have all, without exception, met the strict criteria and are dedicated pet lovers. Many host families are retired people who miss the
routine and exercise when they suddenly find themselves without a pet. Alternatively, they may be at home during the day with children or pets of their own, and a visiting dog complements their
existing situation perfectly.

“Potential hosts must be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of dog care, have somewhere warm and cosy for pets to sleep, continue home life routines for exercising and feeding, have a safe
garden, and be at home during the day.”

Applicants are met at home, where an initial interview and home inspection are carried out. Questions about dog care experience and personal situation are asked.

Robert added: “If the application is successful, becoming a host family with Barking Mad is rewarding and great fun from the onset. For many people working as a host has quite literally changed
their lives. Caring for a dog at home offers a real focus. Dog walking is incredibly sociable, and keeps you fit.”

She may be one of Trinity University’s most recent recruits, but her schedule is already packed.

About 40 students have signed up just to hang out with her for a spell. She rewards them grandly by playing tug-of-war with her favorite toys, chewing anything within reach and looking adorable.

Jjurgens is a frisky 4-month-old yellow Labrador retriever, but someday you might spot her at an airport fighting terrorism with her bomb-sniffing snout.

Trinity is the only university or school to foster a pup through the Transportation Security Administration Canine Breeding and Development Center — also known as the puppy program — at Lackland Air Force Base, said program manager Scott Thomas.

The goal of the program is not only to train dogs to detect dangerous materials like explosives in mass transit areas, but it’s also to breed a high-energy dog meeting health standards for hips, elbows and eyes needed for the work, Thomas said.

Trinity began fostering Jjurgens in December and will continue until October, when program staff will determine if she makes the cut for work training. Since breeding its first litter in 2002, the program has supplied more than 550 dogs to TSA, the U.S. Department of Defense and other agencies.

All are named for a 9/11 victim. Jjurgens is named for Paul Jurgens, a port authority police officer who was reportedly last seen on his way to help at the World Trade Center. The extra “J” indicates she was bred at Lackland, Thomas said.

“It keeps the victims of 9/11 in people’s memory,” said David Tuttle, Trinity’s dean of students, who takes the puppy home with him at night and has reached out to Jurgens’ family. “I never would have known about Paul Jurgens if it hadn’t been for Jjurgens.”

While Trinity students are busy studying economics or music, Jjurgens is learning to be at ease among crowds with her own student ID strapped to her doggie vest. That is, when she’s not disturbing the dean’s caffeine consumption.

“I have not had my coffee yet that she has not somehow managed to spill it,” Tuttle said.

Though students aren’t allowed to have pets on campus, the university has previously brought puppies to school as finals stress relievers or as a cuddly incentive to snap yearbook photos.

Jjurgens spends much of the day in the office of Katharine Martin, the coordinator for student-edited publications. But as faculty members hold office hours, Jjurgens has “Puppy Hours” once a week, which draw a crowd of students seeking out a few minutes with the resident pooch.

In the evenings, students stop by the Tuttle’s house to walk Jjurgens, though she often prefers to lounge in the yard or try to devour things she shouldn’t. She’s been known to nibble at pieces of gum, banana peels and sweatshirts.

Sophomore Joey Lucci of Miami said he misses his family’s dog so much that he’s given up playing video games after finishing homework to walk Jjurgens instead.

Freshman Maddie Winchester misses her pets back in Portland, Ore., too.

“I am a huge animal lover. So I think it’s really great to be able to interact with animals at school,” Winchester said. “It’s also just a really good way to give back since we’re training her to hopefully help protect all of us.

FAITH LAPIDUS: Welcome to THIS IS AMERICA in VOA Special English. I’m Faith Lapidus.

CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: And I’m Christopher Cruise. This week on our program, we meet an American man working to reunite children with their families in Nepal. Then, we have a story on the Girl Scouts of the USA — the organization is celebrating a big birthday. And, finally, we look at what some people are willing to do for another member of the family: their pets.

(MUSIC)

FAITH LAPIDUS: Conor Grennan was nearly thirty years old when he decided he wanted to do something different with his life. He left his job and used his life’s savings to plan a trip around the world. He began with Nepal near the end of its ten-year civil war.

There, the American volunteered at an orphanage for three months. Eighteen young children were living in the Little Princes Children’s Home near Kathmandu, the capital. Mr. Grennan helped take care of the children and taught them English.

CONOR GRENNAN: “I was very worried about it because I had never really spent much time with children before. As soon as I got into that world, I really enjoyed it. We became very, very close by the end of my time there.”

He decided to return to Nepal a year later, in two thousand six, after the war ended. He discovered then that the children were not really orphans but the victims of human traffickers.

CONOR GRENNAN: “All these children had parents. They weren’t orphans at all. These children had been actually taken because their parents feared that they would be abducted by the rebels. Their parents had actually paid these traffickers not knowing that the traffickers intended to sell their children. They thought they would take their children to protect them.”

The children had been sold and then abandoned, and ended up at the Little Princes Children’s Home.

CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: Conor Grennan now had a new goal. He set out to help reconnect Nepalese families with children sold into trafficking.

CONOR GRENNAN: “There were so many children, probably fifteen thousand children that were affected by this problem.”

Mr. Grennan became an advocate for those children. In his book “Little Princes,” he explains why.

CONOR GRENNAN: “It’s amazing how a problem can really come to life when you get to know the people who are victims of these problems.”

He says he wrote the memoir to help raise awareness about child trafficking, but also to show that anyone can make a difference.

Mr. Grennan established a nonprofit group in Kathmandu called Next Generation Nepal. The organization works to find lost children and reunite them with their families. So far, he says, his group has reconnected three hundred Nepalese children with their relatives.

FAITH LAPIDUS: Nancy Wong is a volunteer who has been working with Mr. Grennan since last August.

NANCY WONG: “I basically give up my life in the U.S. and I feel like I need go to Nepal to join your group and really try to make a difference for these trafficked children.”

Ms. Wong says reuniting the children with their families is a process.

NANCY WONG: “The first step is, of course, rescuing them from exploitation and securing them into our transit homes. We do that in partnership with the government of Nepal.”

The second step is to search for the biological family. She gave an example of a girl who had been separated from her family since she was two years old.

NANCY WONG: “We had no real name. We had no idea even what part of Nepal she’s from.”

But she says workers known as integration managers guessed the general area where the girl was from based on her facial features.

NANCY WONG: “[They] literally went from village to village, from bus stops to tea shops to restaurants, asking for any clue. And finally after a few months we found her uncle.”

She says the work continues even after children are reunited with their families. “We monitor the progress,” she says, “to make sure that they are integrating well, going to school, and are not being exploited at home.”

CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: Conor Grennan says child trafficking in Nepal is part of a bigger problem.

CONOR GRENNAN: “There is the sexual trafficking, there’s the labor trafficking, there’s the trafficking we see in Nepal. There has to be some kind of, I believe, external pressure on the government to take these seriously and to start looking at policies that can really combat these problems effectively.”

(MUSIC)

FAITH LAPIDUS: The Girl Scouts of the USA are celebrating their one hundredth birthday this year. A woman named Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout troop on March twelfth, nineteen twelve. It was in Savannah, in the southern American state of Georgia. Since then, more than fifty million American women have been in the Girl Scouts.

(SOUND)

These are Girl Scouts singing in a neighborhood park in New Orleans. Ten-year-old Cassidy Lee Brookes enjoys all the outdoor activities that her troop does.

CASSIDY LEE BROOKES: “We go canoeing, we go camping, we do sing-alongs, we do all kinds of stuff.”

Cassidy wears a green Girl Scout vest covered with the badges she has earned by learning new skills, like going on a camping trip.

CASSIDY LEE BROOKES: “If you do camping you get badges and all kinds of stuff for cooking and cleaning, because you have to do everything on your own. You have to cook the food, you have to serve it. So it is really fun.”

AP

Girl Scout Brownies selling cookies in a Raleigh, North Carolina, neighborhood

CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: Outdoor activities have remained a large part of scouting for girls and boys. But as roles for women in society have changed, so have the Girl Scouts. Fifteen-year-old Mania Gaver says scouting helps her to gain valuable experience for the future. For instance, the girls can earn patches for their vests by learning about jobs and serving in the community.

MANIA GAVER: “To get patches you have to interview different people in different jobs, you can shadow like museum curators and stuff like that. There are a lot of trips you can go on, service-wise, and a lot of volunteer opportunities.”

Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts in the United States a few years after two organizations, the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, began in England. Her goal was to help girls develop physically, mentally and spiritually by bringing them into community service and the open air.

FAITH LAPIDUS: Lidia Soto-Harmon, chief executive of the Girl Scout Council, says Low faced many challenges.

LIDIA SOTO-HARMAN: “There were people that did not believe that girls should do anything more than learn how to bake and be at home, and here she was taking girls camping. We have pictures of her with girls and machetes because when they would go camping, they really went out into the wilderness.”

Today more than ten million girls take part in scouting in one hundred forty-five countries — from Argentina to Zambia. There are three million girls and adult volunteers in the Girl Scouts of the USA. Ms. Soto-Harman says this year is a time for the organization to look back and ahead.

LIDIA SOTO-HARMAN: “As we approach this one hundredth anniversary we are just bursting at the opportunity we have to really inspire a new generation of girls with the message of leadership, with the message of caring for the environment, with the message of being kind to others, respecting country. These are values that we all share and that we need to celebrate.”

(MUSIC)

CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: In New York City last week, a four-year-old Pekingese named Malachy won the top prize at the nation’s top dog show.

ANNOUNCER: “Best in show at the one hundred thirty-sixth annual Westminster Kennel Club, America’s dog show, is the Pekingese.”

Malachy defeated six other dogs to take the top prize on Valentine’s Day. The five-kilo dog with a big head of hair has won many top prizes. But last year he finished second at Westminster. More than two thousand dogs competed in the two-day show.

This year, the club replaced its longtime television sponsor, dog food maker Pedigree. News reports said Westminster officials were unhappy with commercials showing sad images of dogs in need of adoption. The new sponsor, Nestle Purina PetCare, presents much happier looking dogs in its commercials.

FAITH LAPIDUS: Half of all Americans own a pet, mostly cats and dogs. That means a lot of business for the pet care industry. Americans spent fifty billion dollars on their pets last year. That was twenty-three percent more than in two thousand seven.

In Alexandria, Virginia, Gay Lynn Fourney brings her dog to A Dog’s Day Out, which offers day care and overnight services.

GAY LYNN FOURNEY: “She’s my little girl, and I just want to make sure that she has a good time during the day while I’m at work.”

CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: Chas Richardson owns A Dog’s Day Out. He says his business earns a twenty-five percent profit.

Deborah Block

A four-legged client of A Dog’s Day Out, a day care business in Alexandria, Virginia

CHAS RICHARDSON: “The pet industry continues to explode with growth. Our market, dog care, we believe has nothing but growth ahead of it.”

Duane Ekadahl heads the Pet Food Institute, a trade group. He thinks the pet care industry has grown because more people are treating their pets like members of the family.

DUANE EKADAHL: “People want to return the affection they get from pets, and so they buy good food, good products, toys and so on.”

Some cans of higher-priced pet foods have names meant to sound like something their owners might order at a restaurant. One example for cats: “Tender Turkey Tuscany With Long Grain Rice and Garden Greens in a Savory Sauce.”

In Arlington, Virginia, Kamala Mohammed manages a bakery for dogs — the Dogma Gourmet Dog Bakery and Pet Boutique.

KAMALA MOHAMMED: “We don’t put any added salt, sugar or preservatives into our cookies. In fact, I have some people that come in and buy a cookie for themselves because it’s all human-grade ingredients.”

Judy Smith shops there — she buys cookies for her three dogs. She also owns a travel agency, Woof Woof Travels, which serves the growing number of people who travel with their pets.

JUDY SMITH: “I can tell you which cities are very pet-friendly, and once you’ve decide on that, fix you up in a hotel or motel, give you activities that you can do there, including restaurants that are pet friendly.”

FAITH LAPIDUS: Bark and Bubbles in Fairfax, Virginia, is a business where owners can wash their dogs themselves or pay to have it done. Dogs can also have a birthday party and even get a facial so they look their prettiest.

High school student Shannon Parker chooses the self-serve dog wash. She gives her dog a bath and a blueberry facial. She says the visits are worth the cost compared to the trouble of washing her dog at home.

SHANNON PARKER: “She kind of gets the water all over the house. For me, it’s just a much better option than me trying to do it myself.”

(MUSIC)

CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: Our program was produced by Brianna Blake, with reporting by Faiza Elmasry, Selah Hennessy and Deborah Block. I’m Christopher Cruise.

FAITH LAPIDUS: And I’m Faith Lapidus. Join us again next week for THIS IS AMERICA in VOA Special English.
